The Russian city and Japanese capital were both selected by the governing body's Executive Committee at their meeting in Tonsberg in Norway.

Saint Petersburg will host the competition again after previously doing so in 2009 while Tokyo will take centre stage before welcoming the world for the Olympic Games in 2020.

Competition in Russia will take place at the Saint Petersburg Sport Complex between November 15 and 18.

Action will be followed by World Age Group Competitions for gymnasts aged between 11 and 21.

Russia has been selected despite controversy over doping in the country, with the Russian Anti-Doping Agency currently suspended.

Following the release of the McLaren Report, which alleged the presence of a state-sponsored doping scheme in Russia, the International Olympic Committee asked winter International Federations to freeze preparations for any competitions in the nation.

The call did not apply to summer sports, however.

The 2019 Championships in Tokyo will provide a qualification path for the Olympics in the capital.

Competition will take place between November 29 and December 1 at the Olympic Gymnastics Centre.

Japan previously hosted the World Championships in Osaka in 1984.

The FIG has also awarded the 2018 Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships to Guimaraes in Portugal.

They will take place between June 1 and 3.

"These World Championships in Saint Petersburg and Tokyo will provide the perfect platforms to showcase trampoline, synchronised trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling," said Japan's FIG President Morinari Watanabe.

"Russia has a great history in all of these disciplines with so many inspiring, world-class champions. 

"As far as Tokyo is concerned, it's a great opportunity for the gymnasts to be able to compete for world gold in the same arena as the 2020 Olympic Games."
