Thailand's former world number one Ratchanok Intanon leads the entries for the Badminton World Federation New Zealand Open, starting tomorrow in Auckland.

Intanon, 22, has slipped to ninth in the latest women's singles world rankings.

But she will be desperate to return to the form which saw her crowned world champion in 2013 when action begins at the North Shore Events Centre.

Her first match will be against 37-year-old opponent Jesica Muljati of Indonesia.

World leading stars from China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Australia and Japan will clash with 64 New Zealanders across five events at the week long competition.

Another intriguing contest comes in the mixed doubles.

There, Malaysia's Olympic silver medallist Chan Peng Soon and new partner Cheah Yee See will be up against Indonesian second seeds Shela Devi Aulia and Hafiz Faizal in round one.

Chan reached the final in Rio de Janeiro last year alongside Goh Liu Ying but is now teaming up with 21-year-old newcomer Cheah.

Aulia and Faizal, meanwhile, are ranked 32nd in the world and have already won tournaments in Malaysia and Singapore over the last three years.

Qualifying and men's singles first round matches will take place tomorrow at the Grand Prix Gold level event.

Action will then continue throughout the week until Sunday (August 6).

The tournament was initially scheduled to be played in March, but was re-arranged due to a clash with three Adele concerts in Auckland.

It was decided the shows by the English singer would create logistical problems for the competition.
