Will Rhoads and Nita Englund were crowned winners of the United States Ski Jumping Championships as they began their Olympic season in impressive fashion.

Competition took place on the large hill at the Utah Olympic Park, with Englund emerging as the winner of the women's event.

Englund returned from her training base in Slovenia to take part in the event and triumphed by achieving jumps of 111.5 metres and 123.5m to claim the gold.

She finished with a tally of 207.5 to end behind Taylor Enrich, with the Canadian, who scored 226.5, ineligible to claim a medal.

Abby Ringquist and Nina Lussi completed the podium with scores of 198.5 and 197.

Englund, who finished in the top 10 at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic test event, hopes her summer work will help her to succeed at next year's Games in South Korea.

"It was important for me to just be relaxed and get ready for the coming Olympic season," she said.

"I wanted to have fun this summer, enjoy it and be relaxed.

"This summer I’ll just hone in on my competitiveness and get that solid base, going into the winter, I'll just see where it takes me."

"The hill in Pyeongchang is cool for me.

"Wind will be a really big factor but the wind nets will help, the hill jumps a lot like the 90 metre in Planica where we train a lot."

Rhoads claimed victory in the men’s event for the third straight year and the fourth time in total.

He achieved a tally of 258 points after jumps of 131.5m and 123.5m, with Junior Casey Larson claiming the silver medal with 253.2.

The podium was completed by Kevin Bickner, who scored 243.3.

The Championships officially began the Olympic season for American ski jumpers, with their trials set to take place in Utah from December 30 to 31.

"Anyone who was on the team in 2014 has retired, so we'll have an entirely new team of guys who have not competed in the Olympics," said Rhoads.

"Everyone is excited to put their best foot forward.

"We're especially excited for the Olympic Trials right here at the Utah Olympic Park.

"It will be high stakes, high energy, everyone will be on their game."

The normal hill US Championships will take place in early October in Lake Placid.
