Morocco denied Ivory Coast a fairytale finish to the Francophone Games as they beat the host nation on penalties to secure the men's football gold medal in Abidjan.

The Moroccan side broke Ivorian hearts with an 8-7 shoot-out success after the contest had ended 1-1 after extra time at the Stade Félix Houphouet Boigny.

Sofian Kiyine broke the deadlock by finding the net in the eighth minute to edge Morocco in front.

The lead stood until midway through the second half when Thierry Kassi equalised for the home side.

Neither team were able to find a winner as the match went into extra-time, but the additional 30 minutes also failed to provide a victor.

It meant penalties would decide the destination of the Francophone Games gold medal and it was Morocco who held their nerve to top the podium in a dramatic conclusion to the sporting action at the event.

Mali overcame the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

Elbilal Toure put Mali ahead early on before Lissondja Nel levelled in the 37th minute.

That was how it stayed until stoppage time at the end of the second half as Lassana N'Diaye scored a last-gasp winner.

Following the conclusion of the sport at the Games, the Closing Ceremony officially brought the curtain down on the event.

The ceremony was described as a "beautiful ending" to the multi-sport event.

"The Ivory Coast is going to miss us and we miss them already," Latifa Moftaqir, the head of the Organising Committee, said.
