Japan's six-time champion Shingo Kunieda has been handed a wildcard for the US Open wheelchair tennis tournament in New York City.

The final Grand Slam of the season will take place between September 7 and 10 with Kunieda, a triple Paralympic gold medallist, completing an eight-strong field in the men's singles.

He is joined by the top seven players in the current world rankings, inlcuding top-ranked Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina.

The Japanese player won the last wheelchair tournament held in New York, in 2015.

Competition was not held last year as it clashed with the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Fernandez, the Australian Open champion, will be among three players looking to end 2017 with two Grand Slam titles.

Britain's Alfie Hewett and Sweden's Stefan Olsson, the winners of the French Open and Wimbledon respectively, will also be in action on the hard courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.

Hewett's team-mate Gordon Reid, the Rio 2016 champion, will be another strong contender.

In the women's singles, Japan's Yui Kamiji is the top seed as she bids to regain her title.

The Paralympic bronze medallist could win a third Grand Slam of the year after her successes in Australia and France.

The Dutch pair of Wimbledon champion Diede de Groot and Rio 2016 gold medallist Jiske Griffioen will be among her competition, while American player Dana Mathewson has been handed a wildcard to add home interest.

In the quads tournament, world number one David Wagner tops the seedings on home soil as he bids for a third US Open title.

Australia's Dylan Alcott, the 2015 winner and Paralympic champion, looks set to be his biggest threat.

Doubles tournaments will also be played in all three categories.
