During the meeting in Muju, where the World Championships took place last month, Bach praised the humanitarian stance taken by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) through their charitable foundation, the THF.

The foundation aims to make a contribution to help address the world refugee crisis through sport.

“Success always needs to take responsibility,” Bach said at the meeting of the THF Board of Trustees.

“Sport can plan a major role in today’s society.

“Sport can be one of the tools that can have a preventive effect on war and violence.”

The meeting also saw the launch of the worldwide online petition campaign, which aims to "demonstrate global support to the use of sport as an empowering tool for refugees worldwide, and to further convince global decision makers to take concrete action in that sense".

The petition now has over 1,030 signatures.

Over 120 member national taekwondo federations pledged to support the petition campaign and further raise awareness about the foundation’s activities within their countries by signing a Humanitarian Charter.

An animated an information booth was also established outside the competition venue to allow athletes to gain further information about the federation.

The THF aims to teach taekwondo and host educational programmes to refugees and other displaced people around the world, with projects already being launched in Jordan, Turkey, Rwanda, Djibouti and Nepal.
