Russia’s Dmitry Polyanskyi and the United States’ Renee Tomlin will target success at the International Triathlon Union World Cup in Tiszaujvaros for the second straight year when action takes place this weekend.

The pair will first be tasked with making it through tomorrow’s semi-finals, with sprint races set to decide the qualifiers for the finals, which will take place on Sunday (July 23).

Athletes will be required to complete three laps of a lake during the 750 metre swim, before two laps of a by two laps of a 10 kilometre bike circuit.

They will then tackle a 5km run course.

Polyanskyi is one of 77 athletes in the men’s field, with the Russian expected to be among the favourites for victory.

Hungary’s Tamas Tóth and Bence Bicsák will hope to make an impact in front of their home crowd, with the former having finished third last year.

Alessandro Fabian and Massimo de Ponti of Italy are also expected to challenge, along with Canada’s Matthew Sharpe and Australia’s Marcel Walkington.

The first nine athletes in the two semi-finals will advance, as well as the athletes with the three best times outside the automatic qualification spots.

A total of 53 women are expected to compete, with Tomlin eyeing a repeat of last year’s victory.

The American could face competition from Elena Danilova of Russia, Mexico’s Vanessa de la Torre and Italy’s Ilaria Zane.

Tomlin’s team-mate Erin Dolan, Russia’s Anastasia Abrosimova and Estonia’s Kaidi Kivioja have been viewed as the favourites from the second semi-final.
