Top seed Soniia Cheah of Malaysia beat home favourite Alina Romanko in straight sets today to secure her place in round two of the Badminton World Federation Russian Open Grand Prix in Vladivostok.

The 24-year-old claimed an 11-3, 11-2, 11-2 win at the Sport Hall Olympic and is now due to face India’s Anura Prabhudesai tomorrow.

Prabhudesai begun her campaign with an 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 victory over Russia’s Anastasiia Semenova.

It was a day of few surprises in Vladivostok with the only notable casualty from the women’s draw being eighth-seeded Russian Ksenia Evgenova.

She lost 7-11, 2-11, 5-11 to India’s Vrushali Gummadi.

Gummadi’s reward is a second-round meeting with another player competing on home soil, Anastasiia Sharapova.

Second seed Evgeniya Kosetskaya is safely through after winning an all-Russian encounter against Anastasia Redkina, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7.

In the men’s singles competition, Czech Republic’s Milan Ludik was the only seed to suffer defeat today with the seventh-ranked player losing 6-11, 6-11, 8-11 to England’s Wang Yuehang.

Awaiting Wang in the third round is Japan’s Kentaro Hoshino.

He advanced to that stage with an 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 win over Russia’s Anton Ivanov.

Russia’s Vladimir Malkov is the favourite for the men’s title following the withdrawal of top seeded-Indian Sourabh Verma.

He started his bid for glory with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 victory over Belgium’s Maxime Moreels.

Due up next for the second seed is compatriot Alexandr Kozyrev.

He came from behind to beat Uzbekistan’s Artyom Savatyugin 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8.

US Open action begun today at the Anaheim Convention Center, where top-seeded men's singles player Lee Hyun-il of South Korea suffered a shock first-round defeat at the hands of India's Kashyap Parupalli.

Parupalli triumphed 21-16, 10-21, 21-19 and will now go onto face Hungary's Gergely Krausz, a 21-19, 21-9 winner over Canada's Timothy Chiu.

In the women's singles competition, top seed and home favourite Beiwen Zhang opened with a comfortable 21-10, 21-8 victory over Hungary's Agnes Korosi.

Standing between her and a place in the third round is Japan's Yui Hashimoto, who overcame Ukraine's Maria Ulitina 21-17, 17-21, 21-13.
