A total of six places in the men's and women's fleet for the Games in the Argentinian capital are on offer at the event, which began on Saturday (July 15) and concludes on Thursday (July 20).

Over 160 athletes from 31 countries have entered the Techno 293 Plus World Championships, the first event where sailors can secure a place at the Youth Olympic Games.

A continental qualifier for South America in the category is set to be held in Peru later this year, before the Oceania event takes place in Brisbane in January 2018.

Mexico will play host to the North American qualifier in February 2018 with Japan staging the Asian equivalent the following month.

European sailors will have the final qualification opportunity at a venue to be confirmed in April 2018.

The techno 293 plus class for youth windsurfers will be held instead of the techno 293 discipline at the 2018 Youth Olympics as World Sailing claim it "has a bigger rig that allows for the wider age range of sailors".

Sailing's programme at the Games also includes men's and women's kiteboarding, IKA Twin Tip Racing and Nacra 15.

Nacra 15 sailors will qualify on the standard boat but the "flying" Nacra 15 version will be used in Buenos Aires.

It will be a "unique boat" but it will not be available for teams to train on until the event itself.

Teams that qualify for the Youth Olympics will be able to train in the flying Nacra 15, and receive coaching, in Buenos Aires between the opening of the Athletes' Village and the start of the competition.

A total of 88 places are on offer through the qualification system across the various sailing classes, with Argentina given six athletes, one in each boat, as the host nation.

Six further universality berths will be made available to eligible National Olympic Committees.

The Club Universitario de Buenos Aires, located in the Green Park cluster of venues, is due to stage sailing at the 2018 Youth Olympics.
