Poland’s Agnieszka Skrzypulec and Irmina Mrozek raced into the overall lead in the women’s competition at the 470 World Championships at the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki.

The 30 qualifiers for the gold fleet raced each other for the first time this week, having been in two separate fields for the opening days of the event.

Skrzypulec and Mrozek produced impressive performances to finish in second and third places in the races contested.

With the pair having not had a worse result than third over the first three days, they now lie on a total of 15 points.

Overnight leaders Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre of Britain slipped to second place on 20, having ended ninth and 14th today, although the latter result is currently discarded.

Slovenia’s Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol are third on 29, with China’s Xiaoli Wang and Haiyang Gao a further point behind in fourth.

Sweden’s Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergstrom remain at the top of the men’s standings on nine.

They placed second and third in today’s races to continue a consistent start to the Championships.

The duo will continue to come under pressure from Mathew Belcher and William Ryan of Australia, who remain second.

The London 2012 Olympic champions recovered from a ninth place in the opening race of the day to win the second.

Belcher and Ryan have 15 points overall and will aim to close the gap in the final days of competition.

Austria’s David Bargehr and Lukas Mähr are well place in third on 16.

The Championships will continue tomorrow, with medal races scheduled for July 15.
