The United States have sealed their place at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan following a comfortable victory over North American rivals Canada today.

The Eagles won the second leg of their clash by a record score of 52-16 at the Torero Stadium in San Diego with their eight tries dampening the visitors' Canada Day celebrations.

It was the biggest margin of victory for the US over their North American rivals in their 58-game history and the overall aggregate score from the clash stood at 80-44.

After sealing their place, the US will now join Pool C in Japan alongside England, France, Argentina and an Oceania qualifier.

The first leg in Hamilton in Ontario was unable to separate the two rivals with the match ending in a 28-28 draw.

However, the second fixture was far from close with American number eight Cam Dolan scoring two tries within the first 16 minutes before a third from Nate Brakeley saw the US take a 19-3 lead after 20 minutes.

Ill-discipline from the Eagles and a clinical kicking display from Gord McRorie saw Canada reduce the deficit at half-time with the score at 19-9.

Canada emerged after the break and immediately scored courtesy of flanker Admir Cejvanovic following a searing break by left-wing Dan Moor.

However, two tries from replacement hooker Joe Taufete’e as well as scores from scrum-half Nate Auspurger, prop Dino Waldren and lock David Tameilau put the Americans out of site.

Canada will now go on to face a tricky two-leg play-off against Uruguay for the right to qualify as Americas 2.

All remaining qualification matches will be finished by the end of next year and the top two teams from each pool will reach the quarter-finals, with the tournament beginning on September 20 before concluding with the final at the International Stadium in Yokohama on November 2.

Rugby's growth in the US has risen in recent years and it was recently claimed the sport's fan base in the country has gone past the 40 million people mark.

This has been put down to rugby sevens’ debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

In recent years, a number of high profile rugby matches have also taken place in the US.

Ireland defeated New Zealand 40-29 at Chicago's Soldier Field in November while Saracens and London Irish played an English Premiership match at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, last year.

Premiership Rugby announced in May that they had struck a new four-year deal to stage matches in the US.
