Hosts Russia have been eliminated from the FIFA Confederations Cup after losing 2-1 to Mexico at the Kazan Arena in Group A today.

Alexander Samedov had given the Russians the lead on 25 minutes, only for Nestor Araujo to fire the Mexicans level five minutes later.

Hirving Lozano than punished a shocking error by Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev to send the South Americans through to the semi-finals in second place.

Akinfeev failed to clear a bouncing ball, allowing Lozano to sneak in and score the winner seven minutes into the second half.

To compound Russia's misery, Yuri Zhirkov was sent off after receiving a second yellow card on 68 minutes.

The exit will be a significant blow for the hosts as they prepare to host next summer's World Cup.

Russia are the first host nation to be eliminated after the group stage of the Confederations Cup since South Korea in 2001.
