Gotland is poised to host the 16th edition of the Island Games, which will take place until June 30.

Action will begin tomorrow on the Swedish island, with over 2,000 athletes expected to compete.

The Games will feature 24 islands, with Aland, Alderney, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Froya and Gibraltar among those joining the hosts.

Greenland, Guernsey, Hitra, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Jersey, Menorca, Orkney, Rhodes, Saaremaa, Sark, Shetland Islands, St Helena, Western Isles and Ynys Mon are also set to take part.

Cyclist Mark Cavendish and athletics’ Kelly Sotherton are among the high profile athletes to have competed at past editions of the Games.

Cavendish won two gold medals at the 2003 edition of the Games representing the Isle of Man, while Sotherton claimed eight golds medals for the Isle of Wight across the 1997 and 1999 editions.

The last of Sotherton’s two golds were earned in Gotland, when the Swedish Island last staged the event.

The island finished with 50 gold, 54 silver and 29 bronze medals.
