Olympic champion Evgeny Tishchenko of Russia moved a step closer to successfully defending his heavyweight title as he progressed to the final of the European Boxing Championships in Kharkiv.

The Russian is one of four boxers who will be hoping to clinch their second straight continental gold medal when the finals are held at the Lokomotiv Sports Palace tomorrow.

It also proved to be a record-breaking day for the British contingent as seven of the country's eight semi-finalists booked their place in their respective finals.

Rio 2016 gold medallist Tischenko made light work of Paul Omba Biongolo in his last four contest, outclassing the Frenchman on his way to a unanimous points victory.

He will face Cheavan Clarke for the European heavyweight crown after the Englishman beat Roy Korving of The Netherlands 5-0.

Tischenko's team-mate Vasilii Egerov, a World Championships silver medallist, also ensured he got the chance to defend his title as he reached the light flyweight final.

Egerov proved too strong for Belarusian Yauheni Karmilchyk, wrapping up a unanimous win to set up a meeting with England's Galal Yafai, who overcame Spain’s Samuel Carmona by split decision.

Reigning flyweight champion Daniel Asenov safely progressed to the final with a comprehensive 5-0 success over Ukrainian opponent Dmytro Zamotaev.

His opponent for the gold medal will be England's Niall Farell, who dispatched Ireland's Brendan Irvine by the same scoreline.

Irvine's compatriot Joe Ward fared better as the defending light heavyweight gold medallist outfought Valentino Manfredonia of Italy with a comfortable unanimous victory.

Ward will clash with Russia’s Muslim Gadzhimagomedov, who continued his surprise run to the final with a commanding 5-0 triumph against Croatian competitor Damir Plantic.

Gadzhimagomedov was a late call-up for Russia after Georgy Kushitashvili was denied entry to host country Ukraine for the event.

He was one of nine members of the Russian delegation reportedly prevented from entering for "illegally" visiting Crimea.

Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and Ukraine's capital Kyiv has imposed travel bans on numerous Russian politicians and celebrities who have since visited.

Peter McGrail of England and Ukraine's Mykola Butsenko will contest the bantamweight final after they beat Spain's Jose Quiles Brotons and Kurt Walker of Ireland respectively.

England's Pat McCormack showed all his class to beat the home nation’s Ievgenii Barabanov in his welterweight bout.

The English boxer will go up against Abass Baraou of Germany, who swept aside Vasilii Belous of Moldova by unanimous decision.

McCormack's victory saw him follow twin brother Luke into a European final.

Luke McCormack will entertain Armenia’s Hovhannes Bachkov for the light welterweight gold medal after he dispatched Evaldas Petrauskas of Lithuania.

Bachkov sealed his final berth with a unanimous victory over Tomasz Polski of Poland.
