Rio 2016 C1 Olympic champion Denis Gargaud Chanut is set to make his return to the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Cup when action begins in Augsburg in Germany tomorrow.

The Frenchman missed last weekend’s season opener in Prague after he delayed his return to training.

However, he is expected to compete at the Augsburg Eiskanal, the venue where the sport made its Olympic debut in 1972 when the Games were held in Munich.

Gargaud Chanut has also won seven medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships including three gold, three silver and one bronze.

However, despite winning the Olympic title, the Frenchman has decided to continue competing after harbouring some thoughts of quitting.

"I had won everything I wanted to win in the class," he said.

"I said if I won the Olympics in Rio, maybe I would quit, but given the fact I enjoy every moment of it, I was looking again to start in races, I decided to keep going.

"It is just the best way you can practice.

"I had to re-start training quite late after Rio because I had a lot of things to do, media stuff and partner thanking."

At last weekend’s opener in the Czech capital Germany’s Sideris Tasiadis claimed his first-ever Canoe Slalom World Cup title in emotional circumstances.

The 27-year-old, who won silver at London 2012, could not hide his emotion when he crossed the line in the men's C1 event just two years after his girlfriend's death from leukemia.

Elsewhere, Vit Prindis of the Czech Republic clinched his first title in the men’s K1 division.

Olympic champion Maialen Chourraut of Spain won the women’s K1 title while Great Britain’s Kimberley Woods clinched the C1 gold.

Racing in Germany is set to begin tomorrow and will conclude on Sunday (June 25).
