It was another impressive day for the Koreans at the AsiaWorld-Expo after they wrapped up both the women's sabre and men's épée titles yesterday.

The men's sabre team of Gu Bongil, Kim Junghwan, Kim Junho and Oh Sanguk successfully defended the title they claimed at last year's event in Wuxi in China.

On that occasion they defeated China in the gold medal contest but this time they beat Iran 45-42.

China's bid to go one better than last year ended in the semi-finals when they were once again beaten by South Korea 45-28.

They did recover to take the bronze medal, however, beating hosts Hong Kong 45-34.

China improved upon their silver medal from last year's Championships as they won women's team épée gold.

The squad of Sun Yiwen, Xiang Yixuan, Xu Nuo and Zhu Mingye claimed a narrow 34-30 win over their South Korean rivals, the former champions, in the final.

Japan took the bronze medal as Hong Kong narrowly missed out on a bronze medal for the second time today.

The hosts were beaten 45-41.

The event in Hong Kong offered fencers a final chance to hone their preparations before the World Championships in Leipzig.

Competition in the German city is scheduled to run from July 19 to 26.
