Rio 2016 Olympian Mohamed Hamout was among the winners as the African Boxing Championships began in Brazzaville.

The Moroccan claimed a unanimous points success against Mekki Ben Said of Tunisia in the preliminary rounds of the men's lightweight division.

Hamout competed at bantamweight at Rio 2016, losing in the round-of-16 to Cuba's eventual champion Robeisy Ramírez.

Only five bouts were contested on day one in the Republic of Congo's capital.

In a second lightweight men's preliminary, Gildas Bangana of Central African Republic beat Codjo Odje Rodolphe Cafagnan of Benin after his opponent was disqualified.

Three quarter-finals also took place in the women's flyweight competition.

Morocco's Yasmine Mouttaki made it two wins for her country by defeating Botswana's Beauty Botr by unanimous decision.

Esotia-Rossette Ngrndongala of Cameron sneaked through with a 3-2 decision victory against Caroline Linus of Nigeria.

Action will continue in Brazzaville tomorrow.

The tournament was initially due to begin on May 27 but the dates were changed to ensure that the event"met the high standards demanded from such a prestigious competition".

It is the sole African qualifying event for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg and will now finish on June 25.
