Venezuela successfully defended their men's team épée title at the Pan American Fencing Championships in Canadian city Montreal.

Their team of Gabriel Lugo and the Limardo brothers, Rubén, Jesus and Francisco, were in fine form throughout the competition at the Centre Pierre Charbonneau.

The quartet saw off the challenge of Puerto Rico in the quarter-final stage of the competition, before beating hosts Canada 45-30.

Argentina would pose the opposition in the final, after the South Americans overcame the United States 45-40 in their semi-final.

Venezuela would dominate the gold medal match, as they eased to a 45-34 victory over their rivals.

Canada would complete the podium, with the home crowd cheering them to a 41-36 win against the US.

The women’s team sabre competition would see a repeat of last year’s final, with Mexico and the US going head-to-head.

The American team emerged as the winners last year, but Mexico gained revenge after a closely fought contest.

Úrsula González, Paola Pliego, Julieta Toledo and Vanessa Infante combined to give Mexico a 45-40 victory.

The result ended the American domination of the event, who had triumphed at the last seven Championships in the discipline.

Bronze was earned by Venezuela, who beat Canada 45-27.

The Championships will draw to a conclusion tomorrow, with the men's team sabre and women's team foil titles set to be decided.
