Calgary will host the International Luge Federation's (FIL) 2021 World Championships, it has been announced.

A vote at the FIL Congress in Constanța in Romania saw the Canadian city defeat German challenger Oberhof by 20 votes to 15.

The 2021 World Championships will be the 50th held by the FIL since the first edition in Norway's capital Oslo in 1955.

They are traditionally held every year, except for years including the Winter Olympics.

Calgary will play host for the fourth time, having previously staged the 1990, 1993 and 2001 events.

Action will take place at the Canada Olympic Park bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track.

The city also hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics Games and is currently weighing up whether to enter the 2026 race.

The 2021 Championships will be the last major luge event before the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.

Seven titles are contested at World Championship level, with men, women and doubles teams taking part in regular and sprint luge competitions.

A team relay title is also decided.

This year's FIL World Championships were held in Innsbruck in Austria in January.

The 2019 edition has been awarded to Winterberg in Germany while Sochi in Russia, the 2014 Winter Olympic host, is due to stage the 2020 event.

Doubts remain over Russia staging major winter competitions, however, following allegations published in the McLaren Report which claimed that a widespread doping scheme was in operation at Sochi 2014.

In December, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation stripped Sochi of their 2017 World Championships, moving them to Königssee in Germany in February.
