China’s Lin Yuemei claimed her third medal of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup season today after winning the women’s 25 metres pistol event in Gabala in Azerbaijan.

The 23-year-old, who pocketed gold and bronze medals in the women’s 10m air pistol event during the first two World Cup stages of the campaign, finished with 36 hits at the Gabala Shooting Club.

Lin entered the final with the highest qualification score and held the lead from the outset as she nailed a perfect five hits in her first series.

South Korea’s Kim Minjung secured the silver medal with 34 hits having qualified for the top eight for only the second time in her career.

The result bettered her seventh-place finish in Munich in Germany last month.

The third step of the podium was occupied by the current world number two, China’s Zhang Jingjing, who scored 27 hits and clinched her 15th World Cup medal in the event.

Earlier in the men’s 50m pistol final, Ukraine’s Oleh Omelchuk triumphed to secure his fifth World Cup gold medal in the event.

The 33-year-old battled with Turkey’s Yusuf Dikec for top honours, finally overtaking his rival in the latest stage of the match.

Dikec was sitting on a 3.1 points lead over Omelchuk at the end of the sixth series, but the Ukrainian then fired four out of six shots into the 10th ring, while his opponent hit a costly 7.1 with his third-to-last shot and lost the advantage.

Omelchuk managed to maintain the lead in the final series and finished with a total of 230.4, beating three-time Olympian Dikec by a margin of 1.9.

"I didn’t shoot before Dikec to put pressure on him," Omelchuk said.

"I felt ready quite quickly, so as soon as I was ready I fired my shots, and luckily they were good enough.

"It’s not my usual style, but this time I was feeling quite confident."

Serbia’s Damir Mikec came away with the bronze medal with 205.5.

It earned the 33-year-old his eighth career medal in the event.

His haul includes gold at the 2015 European Games in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.

Action in Gabala is due to continue tomorrow when medals will be awarded in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event.
