The International Luge Federation (FIL) has announced that the 2020 Junior World Championships will be moved across Austria from Bludenz to Innsbruck.

The decision has been taken as an ice track currently under construction in Bludenz will not be ready in time.

Austrian Luge Federation chief executive Reinhard Poller revealed the decision with another year now needed to complete the new facility.

Bludenz was awarded the Championships at the 2016 FIL Congress in Lake Placid in the United States.

It was under the condition that a Junior World Cup could be held one year prior to the event, but neither will now be possible due to the construction delays.

Innsbruck will now host the event at the Olympic sliding track where the city hosted this year's FIL World Championships.

The new track in Bludenz is being built with "new technology", it is claimed, designed to ensure it is less costly than previous venues.

At the Lake Placid Congress, FIL President Josef Fendt admitted that expensive ice tracks were a concern.

"Luge itself has the status of a core sport in the Olympic programme and I do not currently see any specific threat of losing this status," he said at the time in June 2016.

"On the other hand, there is criticism relating to the increasing cost of ice tracks.

"We are already working closely with the International Olympic Committee to counteract this issue."
