Ukraine's Yana Belomoina celebrated a maiden International Cycling Union (UCI) Mountain Bike World Cup victory in Albstadt, Germany.

The 24-year-old placed herself in the lead group of the women's race on the climber friendly course.

Annika Langvad of Denmark was seeking to claim a second straight win, following success in Nové Město na Moravě last weekend.

Her hopes of victory were hindered by two crashes, which prevented her from challenging for the podium.

Belomoina was able to attack on one of the final climbs of the day, with the Ukrainian able to join Poland's Maja Wloszczowska, who had launched an earlier solo move.

She was able to pull clear of Wloszczowska before the final descent, ultimately claiming victory in a time of one hour, 38min and 25sec.

Wloszczowska would cross the line 16 seconds behind the winner, while Switzerland's Jolanda Neff completed the top three in 1:38:48.

Switzerland's Olympic and world champion Nino Schurter continued his strong start to the World Cup season in the men's event.

Schurter was victorious last weekend in the Czech Republic and he put his rivals under pressure from the start of today’s race.

He was challenged by The Netherlands' Mathieu van Der Poel, but eventually broke his rival's resistance as the soaring temperatures began to take their toll.

A crash by the Dutch rider allowed Schurter to move further clear, with the world champion triumphing in 1:33:38.

Van Der Poel finished as the runner-up in 1:34:04, with the podium completed by New Zealand’s Anton Cooper in 1:34:27.
