The Ukrainian Athletic Federation (FLAU) have claimed discus thrower Olena Antonova has been upgraded to the silver medal position at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Antonova finished third at the Games, after throwing a distance of 62.59 metres in the final.

She finished behind the United States’ Stephanie Brown Trafton and Cuba’s Yarelys Barrios, who achieved distances of 64.74m and 63.64m respectively.

Barrios was stripped of her silver medal in September, after re-analysis of samples conducted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 33-year-old tested positive for prohibited substance acetazolamide, a diuretic and masking agent.

In a statement published on their website, FLAU said they have a letter from the IOC telling them of the upgrade.

"At the Olympic Games in Beijing, Olena Antonova won the bronze medal with a discus throw," the statement said.

"However, due to the disqualification of Cuban Yarelis Barrios, who was second, the Ukrainian has been upgraded to silver.

"This is stated in an official letter from the International Olympic Committee."

Barrios was awarded the London 2012 bronze from the event she finished fourth in after silver medallist Darya Pishchalnikova of Russia was disqualified for doping.

Antonova herself was given a two-year doping ban in 2013, after a positive test for stanozolol.

The positive had come after a re-test of her sample from the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Antonova had already retired from competition when she was given her two-year ban.

China’s Song Aimin looks set to receive the bronze medal from the 2008 Games, having initially finished fourth with a throw of 62.20m.
