The French capital, a candidate city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, jointly hosted the event with German city Cologne.

Paris staged 30 of the 64 matches at the tournament, with games taking place at the AccorHotels Arena.

Those matches were attended by a total of 223,956 fans at an average of 7,465 per game.

According to the IIHF, those figures have only been bettered by two cities who were also the secondary venue at the World Championship in the past two decades - Ostrava in the Czech Republic two years ago and Nuremburg in Germany back in 2001.

A total of 234,490 spectators went to the 30 matches at the 2015 edition at an average of 7,816, slightly higher than the figure in Paris.

Nuremburg hosted 34 matches at the 2001 tournament, with 257,530 fans going through the turnstiles.

As a result of the impressive attendance statistics, the IIHF said Paris was "right in the mix as arguably the most successful second-venue hosts" in the history of the tournament.

A sold-out crowd of 14,510 saw the host nation push Canada, the Olympic gold medallists and eventual runners-up following defeat to Sweden in the final, all the way before they succumbed to a narrow 3-2 loss in Group B.

There were seven games in Paris that attracted more than 10,000 fans.

France were unable to qualify for the quarter-finals as they finished fifth in their group.

The two semi-finals and the gold and bronze medal matches were held at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne.
