The 21-year-old edged a tight race at the Olympic Stadium to win in a time of 50.73sec.

Senegal’s Amadou Ndiaye took silver 0.21 behind Machava in 50.94.

Ndiaye finished well and prevented a Mozambique one-two as he narrowly overtook Kurt Couto in the final few metres.

The 32-year-old held on for the bronze medal in a time of 50.97.

There was also a first gold medal at the Games for Guinea-Bissau today.

Jessica Da Silva Inchude took gold in the women's discus final after throwing 50.23 metres in her opening throw.

Bahrain's Noora Salem Jasim fell 11 centimetres short and had to settle for silver with 50.12m.

It was a second medal of the Games for Jasim after she also took bronze in the shot put.

Morocco's Amina Moudden posted 49.56m to take bronze.

Moroccan middle-distance star Rababe Arafi successfully defended her women's 1,500m title.

The 26-year-old finished ninth in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World championship final two years ago and also made the Olympic final, finishing in 12^th place in Rio de Janeiro.

Arafi won in 4:18.82, over a second clear of Turkey’s Maryem Akdag, who clinched silver in 4:19:91.

Algeria's Amina Bettiche finished in 4:21.29 to steal bronze on the line from Bahrain's Tigist Gashaw, who missed out on the podium by just 0.02.

Hosts Azerbaijan claimed two gold medals in today’s freestyle wrestling finals.

Mahir Amiraslanov and Nurmagomed Gadzhiyev both secured titles in the 57 kilograms and 97kg events respectively while compatriot Magomed Muslimov had to settle for silver at 65kg.

The Azeri team took their overall wrestling tally to 11 medals over the first three days of the competition, six of them gold at the Heydar-Aliyev Arena.

Amiraslanov claimed the first of the day for the home country as he defeated Kazakhstan's Zhandos Ismailov.

Muslimov then failed to make it two in a row for Azerbaijan as he was defeated by 2016 Asian Championships winner Meisam Nasiri of Iran.

Gadzhiyev provided some more joy for the home fans, however, as he proved too good for Iran's Amir Mohammadi.

Gadzhiyev had previously cruised past his opponents 11-4 and 9-3, before claiming an emphatic 11-2 win in the final.

In table tennis, Turkey's reigning European champion Melek Hu brushed aside Azerbaijan’s Ning Zhing 4-0 in the women’s singles final today.

The Chinese-born player battled through a tight opening game, before easing to victory later on at the Sarhadchi Arena.

Hu saved two game points in a dramatic opener, but went on to win the match 13-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-4.
