Sarah Sonnichsen achieved a European record in the women's compound qualification round at the Archery World Cup, as the season got underway in Shanghai.

The Danish archer held the current record, but surpassed her previous tally by one as she achieved a total of 707 out of a possible 720 points.

"I’m trying my best this year to step up my game a bit," said Sonnichsen.

"I've been working on some stuff, mentally, because I have it kind of hard sometimes.

"This year, I'm going to be more prepared. 

"I tried it last year so I know what to work on."

Colombia's Sara Lopez, the current world number one, ended qualification in second place by achieving a total of 701 points.

So Chaewon of South Korea was third on 699.

The United States' Reo Wilde finished top of the men's compound standings on 707 points, with South Korea's Kim Jong-ho tying his score in second.

Steve Anderson completed the top three with a score of 705, with the American having the same score as India's Abhishek Verma.

The US would end as the highest ranked men's compound team as they achieved a tally of 2,116 in qualifying, with South Korea 15 points behind.

South Korea would top the women's standings on 2,084, with Colombia 11 shots behind their rivals in second.

The South Korean team were the dominant force in men's recurve qualifying as they boasted the top four finishers with the Olympic bow.

Kim Woo-Jin led the standings on 689 points, with Im Dong Hyun a further three shots back.

Kim Jong-ho and Oh Jin Hyek completed the top four on 682.

The performance would see South Korea end top of the team qualification by a clear margin, as they scored 2,057 to the Americans' 2,015.

South Korea would repeat their success in the women’s competition as they again held the top four individual positions, with Chang Hye Jin leading on 673.

Ki Bo Bae was one shot behind, while Choi Misun and Kang Chae Young scored 667 and 661 respectively.

Their team would end with a total score of 2,012, with Chinese Taipei second on 1,958.

Competition will continue tomorrow with the start of matchplay action.
