Tim Celen claimed men’s T2 class gold as road races started at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Para-cycling Road World Cup in Maniago.

The Belgian was able to take advantage of Paralympic and world champion Hans Peter Durst of Germany suffering a puncture during the 28.4 kilometre race.

It left Celen, Italy’s Giorgia Farroni and Britain’s Craig McCann battling to claim victory heading into a sprint finish.

Celen emerged as the victor in a time of 56 min and 6sec, defeating his rivals by 2sec.

McCann, who competed in fencing at the London 2012 Paralympics, would edge Farroni for second place.

France’s Quentin Aubague would add to his victory in yesterday’s T1 time trial by winning the road race in 1:05:31.

He edged out Russia’s Sergei Semochkin, who was awarded the same finishing time in second place.

The Czech Republic’s Jiri Hindr was 16sec behind to earn bronze.

Canada’s Shelley Gautier won the women’s T1 race in 53:06, with Russia’s Yulia Sibagatova ending 1:44 behind.

Jill Walsh and Germany’s Jana Majunke both ended the women’s T2 road race in 45:25, but the American was able to claim the victory.

Australia’s Carol Cooke was 1:11 behind in third.

Further American success came with Alicia Dana winning the H3 women’s race in 1:31:36.

The podium was completed by Brazil’s Jady Martins Malavazzi and Italy’s Francesca Porcellato, who crossed the line in times of 1:39:22 and 1:39:23.

Russia’s Svetlana Moshkovich comfortably won the women’s H4 event in 1:33.49, finishing over 3 min clear of Germany’s Christiane Reppe.

Switzerland’s Sandra Graf claimed bronze in 1:39:37.

Ireland’s Ciara Staunton was the sole competitor in the H2 event and achieved a time of 1:42:26.
