Turkey finished the European Karate Championships on top of the overall medals table in front of a home crowd in Kocaeli.

The Turkish squad ended the four-day event at the Şehit Polis Recep Topaloğlu Sports Hall with four gold medals.

Avictory in the men’s kumite team competition was the highlight of the closing day.

Enes Erkan led the team into a gold medal clash with France in what was expected to be one of his final international appearences.

Alongside team-mates Ugur Aktas, Gokhan Gunduz, Ridvan Kaptan, Serkan Yagcli, Alparslan Yamanoglu and Muhammet Ali Yilmaz, the Turkish great helped secure a 9-1 victory in the final.

"In front of our public and at home we beat a great team such as France," Aktas, winner of the men’s under 84kg event yesterday, said. 

"We are really happy for this gold medal and I hope it will help us to continue getting more and more success.

"We have the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in our heads and we will try to keep on improving to do our best and to represent our country there."

Spain has proved dominant in men’s kata competitions and their success continued in the team event, with Jose Manuel Carbonell, Sergio Galan and Francisco Jose Salazar combining to good effect.

The trio secured the gold medal by beating Italy in the final.

Italy bounced back with their women’s team producing a strong display to beat France.

Their squad of Viviana Bottaro, Sara Battaglia and Michela Pezzetti claimed a convincing win, which followed three Karate 1-Premier League triumphs in Paris, Rotterdam and Dubai.

"We are exultant for this victory," said Battaglia.

"We have been working for four years to win the European Championships, and after so much effort together and so many days of suffering, we have managed to get what we worked so hard for."

Turkey ended top of the medals table with four golds and 14 medals in total, with Italy and Spain sharing second place, securing eight and five medals respectively.
