Switzerland's Jenny Perret and Martin Rios won the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships gold medal after a 6-5 win against hosts Canada in today's final in Lethbridge.

Perret and Rio finished the Championships undefeated and overcame Canada's Joanne Courtney and Reid Carruthers in a dramatic final at the ATB Centre.

It is the sixth time that Switzerland have won the title and the fifth time they have won it undefeated.

Rios claimed his second mixed doubles gold medal of his career after also winning in Erzurum in Turkey in 2012.

After trading single points in both the first and second ends, Canada claimed two consecutive steals in the third and fourth before adding another single point in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

On a power play in the sixth end, Switzerland won a single point before holding Canada to a single in the seventh.

Canada entered the eighth end with a three-point advantage, but a mistake by Courtney on her final stone handed Perret the chance to score four points on her final attempt which she took to seal the win.

"I think it is a dream come true - playing Canada in a World Championship final in Canada and in the end, we won it," said Rios.

"That's unbelievable.

"I am especially proud for Jenny as it's her first time.

"It was not an easy draw for the win, but she made it easily.

Last year's silver medallists Dexin Ba and Rui Wang of China won the bronze medals, as they beat the Czech Republic's Tomas Paul and Zuzana Hajkova 6-2.

Finland's Oona Kauste and Tomi Rantamaki defeated Latvia 7-1 after seven ends to finish in fifth place.

Norway beat South Korea 9-2 to secure a seventh-place finish while defending champions Russia finished in ninth place following a 7-5 victory over the United States.

The eight countries to qualify for the first ever mixed doubles curling event at a Winter Olympic Games have also been confirmed.

China, Canada, Russia, Switzerland, the US, Norway, Finland and hosts South Korea will all feature when the discipline makes its Olympic debut at Pyeongchang 2018.
