The Spanish swimmer was in fine form on the opening day of competition, top scoring in the technical routine with a tally of 92.2446 points.

Japan’s Yukiko Inui was narrowly adrift in front of a home crowd at the Tatsumi International Swimming Center in Tokyo, the city which will host the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

She would score 91.0121 to finish as the runner-up, with Canada’s Jacqueline Simoneau rounding off the podium on 88.7567.

The top three would be repeated in the solo free event, with Carbonell debuting her routine on an international stage to good effect.

The Spaniard received 93.6667 from the judges, giving her an overall total of 185.9116.

Inui took the silver medal after her routine score of 91.9000 gave her a tally of 182.9121, while Simoneau’s 90.9667 saw her end third on 178.7234.

“It’s the first time I’ve done this routine in competition — it’s good to do it in a big pool in front of judges," said Carbonell at the event, which doubles at the Japan Open.

"I’m sure we will be changing many things for the FINA World Championships this summer.

“For this event I'm happy, but I think I can improve much more."

The host nation triumphed in the team technical routine, with the Japanese team topping the standings on 91.5684.

They were followed by Mexico and Kazakhstan, who scored 85.5436 and 78.6959 respectively.

Competition will continue tomorrow with the mixed duet and free combination, while the team and duet events conclude on Sunday (April 30).

FINA launched the World Series circuit in January this year.

The French Open in Paris and the China Open in Taiyuan have already taken place, with competitions scheduled for Canada, Spain, United States and Uzbekistan after Japan.
