Double Olympic cross-country skiing champion Charlotte Kalla has opted to again train outside of the Swedish team in the build-up to next season.

The 29-year-old decided to spend the off-season before the 2016-17 campaign by training on her own, outside of the national team set-up.

She has now confirmed that she will do the same again before a season which will include the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

"I have decided to remain outside the national team for the upcoming training season in favour of developing cooperation with the group who were around me for the last training season," she said.

Kalla won the 10 kilometres freestyle gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.

At Sochi 2014, she won her second Olympic title as part of the 4x5km relay team.

The Swede also has three Olympic silver medals in her collection, as well as two world titles.

During the 2016-17 season, she finished on the podium three times during the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup circuit.

She also won three medals at the World Championships in Lahti in Finland.

Her decision to train alone has been backed by her national governing body.

"We would have loved to have Charlotte back in the national team training group but it worked well last year and we respect her decision," a Swedish Ski Association statement said.

"The most important thing is that she feels safe and in a good shape.

"All we want is Swedish success at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang."
