Algeria's Adel Hamek stunned second seed Ahmed Salah of Egypt to clinch his maiden men's singles title at the 2017 All Africa Individual Badminton Championships in Benoni.

The world number 702 caused an upset as he beat the Egyptian player in straight games at the John Barrable Hall.

Hamek, twice a winner of the bronze medal in the doubles competition at the Continental Championships, produced a stirring display on his way to claiming a 21-19, 21-13 success.

The women's singles final had earlier panned out true to the form book as top seed Kate Foo Fune of Mauritius overcame Hadia Hosny of Egypt.

Fune, who represented her country at last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and has two All-African Games gold medals to her name, dropped the opening game before she bounced back to clinch a 16-21, 21-14, 21-8 win.

Before Hamek's surprise win, Algeria had already tasted success on the final day of the event as Koceila Mammeri and Youcef Sabri Medel secured the men's doubles crown.

The Algerian pair disappointed the home crowd as they proved too strong for Andries Malan and James Hilton of South Africa with a 13-21, 21-19, 21-9 success.

South African supporters did not leave the event disappointed, however, as players from the country won the women's doubles and mixed doubles titles, with Jennifer Fry having a hand in both triumphs.

Fry teamed up with Michelle Butler-Emmett to top the women's doubles podium with a 21-12, 15-21, 21-12 win over Hosny and Dana Hany to pile more misery on the Egyptian team.

The 28-year-old then partnered Andries Malan to victory in the mixed doubles as they beat Mauritian pair Georges Julien Paul and Fune 21-19, 19-21, 21-19 in a hard-fought final.
