Action in the Women’s World Rugby Sevens Series is set to take place in Japan for the first time as the competition heads to Kitakyushu.

Games are due to kick-off tomorrow at the Mikuni World Stadium tomorrow with the final taking place the following day.

Along with staging the competition for the first time, Japan will also be making their 2016-2017 bow.

It comes two weeks after they won the qualifying series in Hong Kong, which earned them a spot on the main tour for next season.

The host’s interim head coach Jin Inada said this weekend will be great for the team.

“This is an opportunity to experience a world standard for those who didn’t play in the world series last time or the Rio Olympics and they can do that this time on Japanese soil,” Inada said.

Heading into the fourth stage of this season’s competition, New Zealand currently lead the way thanks to victories in Dubai and Las Vegas, giving them a six point advantage over Australia.

They have been drawn into Group A alongside the host nation, who have six players making their Series debut in the squad, Russia and France.

Rio 2016 Olympic Games champions Australia will be looking to go one better than their rivals, having lost to New Zealand in the Dubai and Las Vegas stage finals, and are in Group B.

Coming up against them will be Fiji, Ireland and Brazil.

Canada are the other team to have won a stage in the competition this season, doing so when the countries were in Sydney, Australia, in February.

The Rio 2016 bronze medallists are in Group C and will play England, Spain and the United States.
