An additional KRW ₩2 billion ($1.75 million/£1.39 million/€1.64 million) has been earmarked by the South Korean Government to fund athletes' training and assist preparations for next year's Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It is due to supplement this year's budget of KRW ₩30 billion ($25.5 million/£20.8 million/€24 million) announced for supporting national team athletes in January,

The extra finance is designed to particularly help national governing bodies expand overseas training programmes and to recruit experts.

This follows the launching of a "cross-functional team" to ensure South Korea's solid performance at their home Games next year.

Officials involved span groups including the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee, the Pyeongchang 2018 Organising Committee and the Korea Institute of Sports Science.

A meeting of the group is scheduled for Wednesday (April 19) to undertake further planning.

Their goal is to finish fourth and 10th on the medals table at the Olympic and Paralympic Games respectively.

At Sochi 2014, South Korea finished 13th at the Olympic Games, winning eight medals including three golds while they failed to win anything at the Paralympics.

It comes as more details about a Pyeongchang 2018 Torch Relay due to arrive in South Korea on November 1 were also unveiled today.

South Korean officials are determined to show their commitment to the Games at a time of political change following the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye last month.

Prime Minister and acting President of the Republic of Korea Hwang Kyo-ahn and speaker of the Korean National Assembly Chung Sye-kyun - two figures on opposite sides of the political divide -each met with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach later in March to express their commitment.
