Malaysia is set to host its first-ever International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event this weekend as 64 players from 17 countries gather to compete at Pantai Cenang in Langkawi.

Cuba's Nivaldo Díaz and Sergio González and the United States' Emily Stockman and Kimberly Dicello will headline the event as the entry points leaders in the men's and women's charts respectively.

"The beach and scenery are stunning and beyond our expectation," said Díaz, who suffered quarter-final elimination alongside González at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"We have trained hard for months in anticipation of this competition, and we hope that we will continue to lead the chart."

American volleyball Olympian David McKienzie, the husband of Malaysian actress Lana Nodin, will team up with Andrew Dentler as the wild card entry in the men's category.

Hosts Malaysia, meanwhile, will be represented by 10 teams, including Elangovan Yogeswaran and Mohamad Ammirol Mat Sidek and Luk Teck Hua and Lee Geok Ting Elaine.

Teck Hua believes the event will act as a stepping stone in cultivating and promoting beach volleyball in Malaysia.

"The sport is growing steadily, but this World Tour will surge the interest in Malaysia," she said.

"Moreover, I am looking forward to polishing my skills and showcasing my talent on the international stage, and hopefully, make Malaysia proud with a first beach volleyball World Tour title."

The event in Malaysia is the fifth on the 2017 FIVB Beach World Tour after stops in Fort Lauderdale in the US, Kish Island in Iran, and the Australian cities of Shepparton and Sydney.

It will take place over four rounds, comprising the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

Joining Cuba, Malaysia and the US on the entry list are Australia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Russia, Scotland, Serbia and Switzerland.

"We will ensure that the games are fairly played and judged," Joseph Gerard, general secretary of the Malaysia Volleyball Association, said.

"By showing our knowledge and professionalism in this field, we can increase the likelihood of the Malaysians' interest towards the sport.

"We would like to wish all the participating teams the best of luck in their games."
