Olympic champion Carolina Marin and top seed Tai Tzu Ying were among the players who progressed to the quarter-finals of the women's singles event at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Singapore Super Series today.

Spaniard Marin, seeded fourth for the tournament at the Indoor Stadium, comfortably swept aside Chia Hsin Lee of Chinese Taipei with a 21-7, 21-11 win in just 27 minutes.

The victory for the 23-year-old set up a rematch of the Rio 2016 final against PV Sindhu as the Indian player progressed by overcoming Indonesia's Fitriani Fitriani 19-21, 21-17, 21-8.

Tai joined the Olympic gold medallist in the last eight by beating team-mate Chiang Mei Hui 21-11, 21-8.

Unseeded Japanese Sayaka Sato, conqueror of Thailand's defending champion Ratchanok Intanon in round one, awaits for Tai in the quarter-finals after she ousted Kim Hyo-min of South Korea 21-16, 21-10.

Second seed Sung Ji-hyun is also through thanks to a 21-11, 21-16 success against Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei.

Sun Yu of China, seeded sixth, will play the South Korean for a place in the semi-finals as she battled to a hard-fought 19-21, 21-13, 21-14 win over team-mate Chen Yufei.

China's Shi Yuqi is the highest-seeded player still in contention for the men's Singapore Super Series crown as he reached the last eight with a straight-games victory in his clash with Spaniard Pablo Abian.

Shi, gold medallist at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, made light work of Abian as he cruised to a 21-10, 21-16 success.

India's Srikanth Kidambi is due to meet Shi in the last eight tomorrow as he overcame Indonesia's Ihsan Maulana Mustofa in three games, 18-21, 21-19, 22-20.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, eighth seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand will entertain Indian Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati in the quarter-finals.

Saensomboonsuk accounted for Hu Yun of Hong Kong with a 21-17, 23-21 victory, while Praneeth proved too strong for Qiao Bin of China, emerging on the right side of a 21-15, 21-23, 21-16 scoreline.
