Japan defeated Canada 2-1 in the final of the men's Hockey World League (HWL) round two competition in Tacarigua in Trinidad and Tobago today.

Both nations had already qualified for the HWL semi-finals by virtue of finishing in the top two, but it was the Japanese who won the trophy following their success.

Kenta Tanaka scored his ninth goal in six matches with a 35th minute strike to level the game, after Scott Tupper's penalty stroke had given Canada the lead four minutes earlier.

Takuro Sasaki then converted from a penalty corner after 40 minutes, which proved to be the winner for Japan.

As well as taking the tournament's top scorer award with nine goals, Tanaka was also named as the player of the tournament.

Trinidad and Tobago's Tariq Marcano was named as the best young player, while Brandon Karess of the United States took the best goalkeeper award.

Japan and Canada join Malaysia and China, who took the top two places at the round two event in Dhaka in Bangladesh, and Ireland and France, who finished first and second respectively in Belfast, at the semi-finals.

The highest-ranked third-placed teams from the second-round competitions have also qualified.

The US finished third in Tacarigua and join Egypt and Scotland in reaching the semi-finals from third place.

Nikolay Yankun put the Russians ahead before goals either side of the third quarter break from Pat Harris and Tyler Sundeen put the Americans in front.

Andrey Kuraev scored nine minutes from time to level the match at 2-2 and force a shoot-out, with Paul Singh and Will Holt scoring the crucial goals as the US triumphed 2-1.
