Canada and Japan secured top spot in their respective pools with 100 per cent records as the two sides won their third group matches at the final round two event of the men's Hockey World League (HWL) in Tacarigua in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Canadian side, ranked at number 11 in the world, were in commanding form as they swept aside Barbados 10-0 to ensure they finished first in Pool A.

Gabriel Ho-Garcia and Gordon Johnston were the star performers as they each netted a hat-trick as Canada set up a meeting with Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Japan wrapped up first place in Pool B thanks to a 5-1 victory over the host nation.

Kentato Fukada scored twice, while Kenta Tanaka found the net for the sixth time at the tournament to give the Japanese a 3-0 half-time lead.

Tariq Marcano reduced the deficit in the second half, but a penalty stroke from Shota Yamada and an open play effort from Kaito Tanaka late on saw Japan seal a comfortable win.

Japan will go up against Barbados in the last eight, with all quarter-finals due to be held on Thursday (March 30).

Russia were second in Pool B after they beat Switzerland 4-1.

Their opponents in the next round will be Chile, who were third in Pool A following defeat on penalty strokes to the United States.

The US, who finished four points adrift of Canada in Pool A, are scheduled to meet Trinidad and Tobago for a place in the last four.

The top two finishers from the round two events will progress to the HWL Semi-Finals.
