Oceania’s 17 National Olympic Committees were treated to an official welcome ceremony by the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) here today.

The ceremony came at the conclusion of the first day of the Olympic Solidarity Forum, which will conclude tomorrow before the organisation's General Assembly, taking place on Saturday (April 1).

Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) President Robin Mitchell was among those in attendance at the event.

“We love sports, because sports bring us together,” said FASANOC President Joseph Rodan.

“We witnessed this when we won the gold medal last year in the Olympic Games.

“Sport helps to install in each and every one of us, the ingredients of a successful person.

“These are the type of thing we try to teach our sporting and young people in Fiji, that sport helps to build good characters and install a winning formula in each and every one of us.

“Having you all here today is an honour for us in FASANOC and I would like to thank Dr Mitchell and ONOC for bringing you all here to Fiji.

“It is fitting that after winning the gold medal last year, we can bring you here to show you what Fiji is all about.”

The ceremony featured traditional Fijian dancing and took place as the sun set at the picturesque location for the General Assembly, which will take place on April 1.

James MacLeod, the ‎associate director of relations with the Olympic Movement at International Olympic Committee, was the special guest at the ceremony.

“I would like to wish ONOC the best of luck with the organisation of the General Assembly on Saturday,” he said.

“In terms of the rugby, congratulations for the [men’s rugby sevens] gold medal.

“I think it was very much part of what the IOC was looking for when adding new sports to the programme.”
