More than 80 junior and senior athletes are set to compete at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Speed Skiing World Championships in Idre Fjäll in Sweden this weekend.

Taking place after the conclusion of the World Cup season, the event begins tomorrow and concludes on Saturday (March 25).

A total of 18 medals are up for grabs at the competition, where athletes will fly down the Choken slope at speeds of 180 kilometres per hour.

Aside from the speed one categories, where skiers wear aerodynamic helmets and a full body skin-tight suit made of latex, competitors participate in normal downhill skiing clothing.

Hosts Sweden, France and Italy are among the favourites for glory at the Speed Skiing World Championships, although Austria are expected to do well in the speed one events.

Valentina Greggio of Italy and compatriot Ivan Origone, who both won gold at the 2015 edition of the event, are highly-fancied for further success in the Swedish resort.

Greggio holds the women's world record with a speed of 247.083 km/h, while Origone currently has the men's mark having stopped the clock at 254.958 km/h.

Former winners on this track, notably Christian Jansson of Sweden and Finland's Jukka Viitasaari, could also challenge.

Speed skiing, a demonstration sport at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, sees athletes either try and clock the fastest team or be the first to cross the line at the bottom of the hill.
