Athletes from 22 different countries are set to take part at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup as the series heads to the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

Competition at the Cairo International Stadium begins is due to begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday (March 26).

World number six Yasser Hefny is heading the Egyptian delegation for the World Cup event, the second of the campaign after the first event in Los Angeles last month. 

Hefny, 28, is a two-time world champion and will be hoping to delight the crowd on home soil with victory in the men's competition.

Egypt have registered 12 men and 12 women to participate.

Competitors from Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Britain, Hungary, Guatemala, India, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, and Ukraine are also due to compete.

According to Daily News Egypt, the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation allowed athletes from Belarus, Ireland, Guatemala and Switzerland to join their representatives in a pre-event training camp earlier this month.

A 17-strong delegation from the UIPM is also likely to be in attendance in Cairo, led by President Klaus Schormann and secretary general Shiny Fang.

Hungary’s Bence Demeter was the winner of the men's event in Los Angeles as he came from behind to claim a dramatic victory.

World number one Lena Schoeneborn of Germany topped the podium for the ninth time in her career at a World Cup event in the women's race in the American city.
