Two Oceania Taekwondo Union (OTU) courses will be held on the eve of the Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ) Open in Auckland in May, it has been confirmed.

The events are due to take place on May 12, with the competition itself scheduled to begin the following day and conclude on May 14 at the North Shore Events Centre.

The first one will be run for kyorugi coaches and referees, while the other will focus on poomsae coaches and judge accreditation.

"The Oceania Taekwondo Union will shortly announce further details for these courses including the cost and how to register," TNZ President Tae Kyung Kim, also a member of the World Taekwondo Federation Council, said in a mid-March update to members.

"We will distribute this as soon as we receive it.

"During this year TNZ will make more of these courses available to members around the country under the new District Boards which will be established in the coming weeks."

The TNZ head also said preparations for the event in May, the first WTF sanctioned competition to be held in New Zealand, were "well underway".

The organisation has pledged to provide regular updates on registration and other details concerning the TNZ Open.

A first for the country, the international event will be a G2 world ranking tournament.

At the same time, five Oceania Championships will also take place.

These are the Oceania Para Taekwondo Championships, the Oceania Poomsae Championships, the Oceania Junior Championships, the Oceania Cadet Championships and the Oceania Colour Belt Championships.

New Zealand sent one competitor to the Olympic taekwondo tournament at Rio 2016 in August.

Andrea Kilday competed in the women's under-49 kilograms category but lost to home Brazilian athlete Iris Sing in the first round.

Kilday qualified for the Olympics by winning gold at the Oceania Taekwondo Championships.
