A safety warning has been issued to South Korean football fans travelling to China for Thursday's (March 23) World Cup qualifier amid security concerns as a result of the current tension between the two countries.

Around 200 supporters are expected to make the trip for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)  third round Group A clash at the Helong Stadium in Changsha.

The South Korean Embassy in China has, however, urged fans to take caution when in China for the match, while the Korean Football Association (KFA) has asked the AFC and the Chinese Football Association (CFA) to ensure there is enough security at the match.

It comes amid strained relations between South Korea and China over the former's deployment of a controversial United States missile defence system.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, which could be used to shoot down missiles aimed at South Korea, has been met with opposition in China.

Chinese officials have always objected to such systems being deployed in its backyard, while South Korea and the US believe it is essential given heightened fears of provocation in North Korea.

The move has reportedly led to a number of anti-South Korean incidents in China.

"South Koreans staying in or visiting China must ensure they cheer on the national team in as orderly a fashion as possible," the embassy said in a statement according to news agency Yonhap.

"Please take extra caution not to cause trouble with the Chinese people with unnecessary words or actions."

The KFA are set to hold a meeting the day before the match to assess the safety measures implemented by the CFA.

They have urged the Chinese association to install a designated zone for visiting fans outside the stadium while increasing the security presence at the 55,000-seater stadium.

South Korea currently occupy second place in Group A.

The top two sides from the group will qualify directly for next year's World Cup in Russia.
