Ireland defeated France in a tense shoot-out to win the Hockey World League (HWL) Round Two competition in Belfast today.

Both nations qualified for the HWL Semi-Finals by virtue of finishing in the top two, but it was the Irish who won the trophy following their success.

The two sides could not be separated in regulation time.

Victor Charlet put the French team 1-0 up with a low drive following a short corner after 30 minutes.

Shane O'Donoghue replied for the Irish with eight minutes left to play, as the French were reduced to nine men following various infringements.

Ireland's Conor Harte, Eugene Magee, Lee Cole and Johnny McKee scored for Ireland in the shoot-out.

A pair of spectacular saves from Irish goalkeeper David Harte proved pivotal as Ireland claimed a 4-2 victory on penalties to clinch the trophy.

They will now have to be one of the two highest ranked third place teams from the other Round Two events to reach the next stage.

Wei Adams opened the scoring for the Scots after 23 minutes before Gavin Byers doubled their advantage after 42 minutes.

Two goals within the space of two minutes wrapped up the victory.

Adams slammed in his second of the match after 54 minutes before Ben Cosgrove sealed the win with a fourth on 55 minutes.
