Double Olympic champion Lin Dan of China booked his place in the next round of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Swiss Open with a comfortable straight games victory over Frenchman Arnaud Merkle.

Top seed Lin, men's singles gold medallist at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012, swept aside his French opponent 21-14, 21-5 to reach round two at the St. Jakobshalle in Münchenstein.

The 33-year-old, also a five-time world champion, is bidding to bounce back from his disappointment at the recent All England Open, where he was beaten in the semi-finals by compatriot Shi Yuqi.

Shi, who lost in the final to Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, is also in action at the Swiss Open and joined his team-mate in progressing to the second round of the BWF Grand Prix Gold event.

The Chinese player, seeded second, overcame Jan Frohlich of the Czech Republic 21-11, 21-13.

Lin's next opponent will be Koki Watanabe of Japan, while Shi will take on Ireland's Scott Evans, with both matches scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Elsewhere in the main draw of the men's singles tournament, defending champion Prannoy Kumar of India, the fifth seed, ousted Germany's David Peng 21-15, 21-18.

His victory set up a meeting with Scotland's Kieran Merrilees.

Kumar's Indian counterpart Sameer Verma is also safely through as he beat Hungary's Gergely Krausz 21-10, 21-16.

Verma, the 13th seed, will play Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama.

One of the pick of the matches to take place on the opening day saw Denmark's Anders Antonsen edge Finland's Kalle Koljonen in a three-game thriller which lasted over an hour.

Antonsen struggled early on and dropped the first game before he launched a stirring comeback to win 16-21, 22-20, 21-9.

England's Toby Penty awaits for the Dane in the next round.
