Mikaela Shiffrin could clinch the overall International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup title for the first time in her career when the American competes in the downhill event at the season-ending finals in Aspen tomorrow.

Shiffrin leads the overall World Cup standings by 378 points from Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec heading into the season's last event.

With only four races left and a maximum of 400 points up for grabs, victory is almost assured for the American, who turned 22 yesterday.

Shiffrin has already triumphed in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines, but will now seek to wrap up the overall classification.

Austrian Marcel Hirscher has already secured the overall men’s World Cup title, marking the sixth successive time he has achieved the feat.

He will aim to continue his fine series of performances over the coming week, with action taking place in Aspen until March 19.

The Alpine team event is scheduled to take place on Friday (March 17), before the final slalom races on Saturday.

The World Cup season will conclude with giant slalom racing on Sunday (March 19).
