Competition took place at Tamkang University, which will host the six days of weightlifting action to be held during the event that is scheduled to take place from August 19 to 30.

During the Opening Ceremony, Chinese Taipei’s double Olympic champion Hsu Shu-Ching was presented with the "Jenő Boskovics Lifter of the Year" trophy she won for her world title-winning year of 2015.

The annual award is named after the late former editor-in-chief of the International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF) World Weightlifting magazine, which oversees the voting.

Boskovics, who died in April 2010 at the age of 81, was the press chief and spokesman of the IWF for decades.

Hsu, who successfully defended her women’s 53 kilograms Olympic crown at Rio 2016, was presented with the award by IWF honorary vice-president Chang Chao-Kuo and World Weightlifting’s senior editor Aniko Nemeth-Mora.

A two-day IWF seminar preceded the test event, aimed at training the international technical officials and national technical officials of the host country.  

Reiko Chinen, an IWF Technical Committee member and weightlifting competition manager for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, was among those involved.

The Universiade is an international multi-sport event organised for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), of which Nemeth-Mora is a technical delegate. 

It is considered to be the largest of its kind in the world apart from the Olympic Games.

Summer and winter editions are held every two years.

Almaty in Kazakhstan hosted this year’s winter event from January 29 to February 8.
