Olympic champion Christian Reitz claimed the men's air pistol spoils as senior competition began at the European 10 metres Shooting Championship in Maribor today.

The German was forced to come from behind to overhaul qualification leader Pablo Carrera of Spain at the Hotel Habakuk and Dras Center.

Reitz won with a score of 241.6 points as Carrera eventually tumbled to fourth place. 

Damir Mikec of Serbia rose to second with 241.4 as Ismail Keles took bronze, with 220.7.

"Wow, what a final," said Reitz.

"In the last shot I lost pressure of my hand. 

"The shot before wasn’t a good shot also, I looked a little bit at my neighbour. 

"Well, honestly I must admit that I had quite a little bit [of] luck in the end."

Russia's Nikolai Kilin, Vladimir Gontcharov and Artem Chernousov won won the corresponding team competition with a score of 1,734.

Ukraine scored 1,728 to pip Serbia for bronze by a single point.

Snjezana Pejcic of Croatia won the women's air rifle event with a score of 249.1.

Stine Nielsen of Denmark took silver, with 417.1.

Daria Vdovina of Russia managed the same score but had to settle for bronze.
