Canada and Olympic silver medallists New Zealand booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Women's World Rugby Sevens Series with unbeaten records on the opening day of the event in Las Vegas.

The Canadian side enjoyed three comfortable victories in Pool A as they overcame Russia 34-7 before they thrashed Argentina 38-7 at the Sam Boyd Stadium.

Ghislaine Landry guided her side to a 21-7 success over France, who they will also play in the last eight of the tournament tomorrow.

Landry also moved joint-level with New Zealand's Portia Woodman at the top of the all-time Women's Sevens Series scorers list as a try in the win against France saw her move to 665 points.

New Zealand were similarly dominant on day one as they kept a clean sheet in a 21-0 triumph over Brazil in their opening Pool C encounter before they cruised to a 27-5 victory against England.

In the pick of the day's matches, the Black Ferns then took on arch-rivals Australia, who beat them in the final of the first-ever women's Olympic rugby sevens competition in Rio de Janeiro last year.

Two tries from star-player Woodman helped them gain the early bragging rights over Australia as they emerged with an impressive 21-14 win.

"We are quietly confident in our own game plan that we’ve set and today has gone well for us," said Woodman.

"Beating Australia was important.

"They are such a good team and we’ve been lucky to take them for a third time now.

“But that’s just day one, day two is a different story and we will go back to base and make sure we recover well ahead of tomorrow.

"It’s going to be a challenge but we’ll be up for it.”

New Zealand will take on Russia in the quarter-finals, while Fiji play Australia and the United States entertain Ireland.

In the men's event, defending overall champions Fiji moved to the brink of the quarter-finals as they picked up two victories in Pool D.

The Olympic champions have not won a tournament this season but looked in good form as they hammered Japan 41-0 and then ousted Scotland 24-12.

New Zealand, current leaders South Africa and the United States also secured two wins apiece.

The event in Las Vegas continues tomorrow.
