Young Chinese competitor Song Buhan showed nerves of steel at the first International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup appearance as he won the men’s 10 metre air rifle contest.

The 20-year-old took home the gold today at the event in New Delhi, India, with a total of 249.5 points, a new world record due to the new ISSF technical rules where finals now consist of 24 shots.

His score pushed 22-time World Cup stage winner Peter Sidi of Hungary into second place by 0.4 points.

The bronze went to another young shooter in the form of Japan’s Atsushi Shimada with a total of 227.4.

“It feels very exciting to win the Gold in my first World Cup participation,” said Song.

“I take inspiration from Zhu Qinan, one of the greatest Chinese Rifle shooters ever.”

Further success for China came in the women’s 10m air rifle category as Shi Mengyao topped the podium with a score of 252.1.

Joining the 19-year-old in the top three was her team-mate Dong Lijie, who came second with 248.9 in the first World Cup event she has participated in since 2010.

India’s Pooja Ghatkar won her maiden World Medal, picking up bronze after scoring 228.8.

Today’s other gold medal went to Penny Smith in the women’s trap final with a total of 40 hits recorded by the Australian.

This put her two ahead of London 2012 Olympic champion Jessica Rossi of Italy while the 27 hits of Finland’s Mopsi Veromaa gave her bronze.

The competition is due to continue until the delegations leave on March 4.
